- Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, also known as Sri Lanka Day, is celebrated on February 4th each year to commemorate the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948.
- This national holiday is celebrated with various cultural and patriotic events, such as parades, speeches, and patriotic songs. People also decorate their homes and streets with the national flag, and traditional foods such as milk rice and sweetmeats are often served. Some people also visit memorials and monuments to remember those who fought for the country’s freedom.
- The flag of Sri Lanka, also known as the Lion Flag, features a yellow field with a large red square at its center, in which a golden lion holding a kastane sword is depicted in a walking stance, facing left. The lion represents the Sinhalese, the main ethnic group in Sri Lanka, while the sword represents the sovereignty of the nation. The four Bo leaves in each corner of the flag represent Buddhism, which is the country’s main religion. The orange and green stripes on the left side of the flag represent the minority Tamil and Muslim communities in the country. The flag is a symbol of the country’s unity and diversity, and is an important national symbol, flown on many public and private buildings on national holidays and other important occasions.

- Sir Arthur C. Clarke was a British-Sri Lankan science fiction author, inventor, and futurist, famous for writing the novel “2001: A Space Odyssey”. He is considered one of the most important figures in the science fiction genre and his work continues to inspire scientists and researchers today.
- Shehan Karunatilaka is a Sri Lankan writer who won the Booker Prize in 2022 for his book the “Seven moons of Maali Almeida”.
